How's your language?

Good? Bad? Grammatically correct? Precise? Vague? Business speak? Emotional?

Given we use it every day and have, literally, grown up with it; it is all too easy to overlook its importance.

In order to explore this, let's turn to that well known business pundit and guru, Humpty Dumpty who infamously said, in a rather scornful tone, "When I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less."

"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."

"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty "which is to be the master - that's all."*

And clearly he was right; for as business leaders we are the masters of the language we use. But do we use the right language? Do we use the language of success or business speak?

The following table illustrates the difference between a traditional approach and what I believe to be a better and more desirable approach:-
